Dismiss Prime Minister Tony Abbott and perform a double dissolution of the Australian Parliament
The issue
Your Excellency,
While it is said by many that Australian voters "deserve what they got", the undersigned would argue that no nation, anywhere on earth, deserves a head of government as crass, corrupt, greedy, cronyist, classist, racist, sexist, bigoted, scientifically and economically illiterate or diplomatically impaired as our currently elected Prime Minister.
Mr. Abbott is fighting an unprovoked war on the poor and unfortunate of our nation. At the G20 summit, Mr. Abbott chose to cast aside discussion of vital global issues in favour of complaining about the lack of support for his GP co-payment (a.k.a. "the sick tax"). Both he and his treasurer, Mr. Hockey, have stubbornly refused to acknowledge or address the widespread harm their polices will cause, yet have the unmitigated gall to complain when their efforts are frustrated by the Senate. To call the current government 'out of touch' is a gross understatement. Mr. Abbott has made it abundantly clear he has no intention of keeping 'big money' out of government: his ties to the Murdoch press empire and mining lobbyists - and his love of their money - are clear for all to see.
He is also blatantly anti-intellectual, anti-technology and anti-science: despite the very real and present threat of climate change, Mr. Abbott insists that coal is good for Australia and his plan to deregulate university fees demonstrates the belief that only the rich should be educated. He also opposes government accountability; laws have been proposed to silence media reporting on intelligence abuses and impose harsh punishment on whistleblowers. He is also highly dismissive of human rights, as his refugee policies and stance on marriage equality demonstrate.
The Abbott government is not only an international embarrassment to Australia, but it is also economically harmful, morally and ethically deficient, and an affront to the Australian values of equality and prosperity for all. Mr. Abbott's removal from office is in the best interests of our proud nation.
Yours sincerely,
James Long
