The Issue

Music has been an integral part of my life, shaping who I am and guiding my passions. I have a deep love for choir, but at Harlem High School, the current choir instruction leaves much to be desired. It pains me to see that our choir is being led by a drama teacher who lacks certification from the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA). This is not fair to students who are genuinely interested in pursuing a career or gaining substantial skills in choir.

Having a qualified, certified educator is not just a want; it’s a necessity. Students deserve to receive the best possible education, which includes having an instructor with the right qualifications and passion for teaching choir. A teacher certified by the GMEA could provide a structured curriculum, proper vocal training, and open up opportunities for competitions and performances that align with educational standards.

According to the National Association for Music Education, high-quality music programs can significantly enhance students' abilities in math, reading, and comprehension, not to mention their personal satisfaction and growth. Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impact of music education on students' academic and personal development. Moreover, certifications like those offered by the GMEA ensure that teachers are trained to cultivate these skills effectively.

Many students at Harlem High, including myself, are passionate about choir and hope to someday pursue careers in music. Without a certified teacher, we miss out on critical training prospects that could further our educational and professional journeys. Harlem High School is known for its commitment to excellent education; therefore, it is essential for the administration to reflect this commitment in all academic and extracurricular offerings.

I urge the Harlem High School administration, the Columbia County School District, and other stakeholders to consider the long-lasting benefits that hiring a GMEA-certified choir teacher can bring to students. By investing in a quality music education, we not only foster talent but also add to the rich cultural fabric of our community.

Your support in this matter can make a tangible difference. Sign this petition to advocate for the hiring of a qualified choir teacher at Harlem High School, empowering students to reach new heights in their musical education.
