Our goal with this petition is to raise awareness and hopefully effect change on the “Chemical Health Rule” that is enforced by Hingham High School and the MIAA. All petitioners believe that there should ABSOLUTELY be a punishment for drinking however the current rule unfairly targets sports players and is not issued fairly. In past instances, only select kids have received 25% off of their season and not everyone that was involved. For example, a party towards the end of last year, only two student athletes receive 25% off of their season when in fact multiple student athletes were present and caught by the police. Earlier this year, a party was shut down by the police and many student athletes were present and got their names taken down, however NONE of them received 25% off of their season. Many students from private schools who are associated with the MIAA only enforce the rule when a substance is used on school property. Students are also punished, if they are in the presence of alcohol and not even drinking. This rule is enforced only by the school through the ”group possession rule” in our handbook , not the MIAA. However, this law contradicts the Samaritan Law because if you are helping someone who is intoxicated, or even giving them a ride to prevent them from driving, you are now going to get 25% off of your season. With this being said, even if you are at a party and being responsible, looking out for the safety of other students, you will be punished for being there. The rule also causes a student athlete who gets 25% of their season taken away, to then sit on the bench so the whole town knows they got caught drinking and takes parenting away from parents. In some cases student athletes can lose their captainship or be ineligible for the remainder of the year. Many parents are often confused and angered that only their child, or a few others get 25% and it can result in parents not disciplining their child and allowing them to continue going to parties because they feel their child has already been humiliated and embarrassed enough. Especially with mental health being a prominent issue in society today, abandoment by a sports team and humiliation may not be the best way to punish an athlete and can lead to a downward spiral. We believe this rule should be changed where if you are caught, instead of missing a sporting event, you should be required to do community service where anyone caught regardless of whether they are an athlete can participate in the punishment. The change will allow all students at the highschool to be affected equally, not just student athletes. We also know it is unrealistic for everyone involved at the party to receive 25%, so we believe that if you go to community service, where you are actually helping effect change in the world it serves as a better punishment and learning experience. The rule also scares many kids, but not enough to deter them from parties and causes kids to run away from the police which can inflict injuries very easily, especially in the cold of winter. Overall the penalty outweighs the crime and we believe that community service is a better alternative to getting 25% off of a sports season, because it teaches student athletes a real lesson and minimizes the risks of student athletes running from the police and causing greater harm to themselves than drinking. We are not writing this petition to allow us to drink, we want a more equal punishment that will effect all students at Hingham High and across the state. We mean no disrespect writing this we hope that the MIAA and School can appreciate the points we have made.
