Stop the construction of a tar plant over the Ghyagi river

Stop the construction of a tar plant over the Ghyagi river

The Issue

A local tar plant is being constructed over Shojha's Ghyagi river, which will not only have an adverse impact on the environment but also on human health, as the manufacturing of tar is a highly carcinogenic process. Shojha's ecosphere is densely forested and is very rich in natural resources such as timber, biodiversity and minerals. The successful installation of a commercial and environmentally degrading project such as this one will alter the environmental health of this belt permanently. The reason why such an enterprise was administratively encouraged in the first place can possibly be attributed to the fact that the current Gram Panchayat Pradhan (Sarpanch) of the region does not belong to the village, hence practising apathy to an area that he bears little identification or sentimental association with. That does not change the fact that he is putting an ecologically crucial belt into a perilous journey with very serious consequences.

In all fairness, such a project can be diverted to a region of a lower altitude with an existing industrial infrastructure. Several plants are operating in areas such as Barmana (cement factory) and regional areas around Sundernagar. Areas like Shojha have no industrial initiatives, to begin with and the beginning of such a trend will only lead to a downfall that is more rapid than the human imagination. Save the Ghyagi River, Save Shojha and Save our Himalayas!
