Implement the "Be the Way Home" Plan

The Animal Coalition of Tampa, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and countless other organizations have been trying for years to persuade Hillsborough County Animal Services to reduce the euthanasia rate and develop no-kill options to save the lives of hundreds of dogs and cats every month.

On May 1, 2013, ACT and Humane Society of Tampa Bay joined by Cat Crusaders, Cat Call, St. Francis Animal Rescue, Animal Based Charities, Save 90, and other animal organizations thought our prayers were answered when the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners passed "Be the Way Home" as our many "sea of green" supporters witnessed their historic vote.  The comprehensive plan was to begin the process of saving animals by allowing 2,000 cats per year to be spayed, neutered, vaccinated and returned to their original surroundings. Read the plan here.  It wasn't all cats, but it was a start.

Unfortunately, more then 6 months have passed, and NOT ONE CAT's life has been saved under this plan because the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners has not reviewed or passed the needed language change to the Hillsborough County Ordinance to allow the implementation of the  Be the Way Home plan.

In fact, since May 1st, the day the Hillsborough County Board passed the Plan, over 4,700 cats have been euthanized at Hillsborough County Animal Services. Nothing has been done to protect the community cats already living in colonies in our community, and nothing has been done to protect the caregivers of these colonies from being ticketed for a problem they did not create, but are trying to help by feeding and managing these colonies.

The organizations are ready, willing, and able to perform the needed vetting of these cats, but they have been repeatedly told no, they can not do do anything to save these cats until the Ordinance is changed by the BOCC.

Please join us in signing this petition and writing to the BOCC and telling them its time to implement the plan they passed on May 1st, change the ordinance and allow these cats to be saved. The BOCC passed the plan in May, now they need to keep their word to the voters and implement it.

Feel free to email all the BOCC as well by clicking here and selecting all their names. Not sure what to write? There's a sample email, that's short, sweet and to the point below.
