I am passionate about spreading awareness regarding how thyroid dysfunction is being over looked by conventional medicine, FDA, and big pharmaceutical companies making synthetic thyroid replacement like Synthroid and Levothyroxine and how they also discourage the use of any medication, synthetic or natural that contains T3 hormone. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome in 2006, I struggled and suffered from debilitating depression, fatigue and muscle and joint pain, amoung other ailments (all hyper and hypo thyroid symptoms after the birth of my third child in 2004). A lump was found by my PCP in 2008 and I was referred to an endocrinologist, after blood work and ultra sound he stated I had a thyroid nodule but not big enough to worry about and put me on Levothyroxine-a T4 only medication. He added that I was low in vitamin D and started me on 2000IU of V-D. He also said I had “Hashimoto’s” and dismissed my concerns by telling me it’s just hypothyroid and it doesn’t have anything to do with my chronic illness and symptoms. Throughout these 13 years I have been on fentanyl pain patch, Vicodin, Xanax, dextroamphetamines, flexeril, cymbalta, abilify, lyrica and many other medications for depression and pain. I have had a mild heart attack at 46 and under went a triple bypass, my main artery was 100% blocked, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high glucose, anxiety, migraines, fibrocystic cysts, endometriosis, ptsd, and a miscarriage and not one doctor thought to check my sex hormones and T3 thyroid hormone, the active and most important hormone in thyroid, before diagnosing me with FMS/CFS. In 2017 I found information on thyroid disease and T3, adrenal fatigue, cortisol, estrogen and progesterone and began my search on how these are all related to chronic fatigue, pain, and depression. I begged my endocrinologist for NDT-a natural desiccated thyroid replacement therapy with the active hormone-T3 and soon after I began my journey back to living life. Throughout this year I have found out, not only did I need T3 but I needed cortisol replacement therapy and magnesium. If you research you will find that 20 million Americans are suffering with untreated or under treated thyroid disorders and the autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Another issue is that pregnant women who are not being tested for thyroid dysfunction become sick for years, like me, after child birth due to undiagnosed postpartum thyroiditis. There was a study regarding the cost effectiveness in testing pregnant women who did not have a history of thyroid disease, even though it’s known that pregnancy can effect thyroid function, they found it was not cost effective to regularly check for changes in thyroid function during pregnacy. They stated cost out weighed quality of life. It’s time to take a hard look at how many patients are suffering with thyroid disease and are being misdiagnosed because they are not being tested appropriately. Then there is the thyroid patients that are suffering with debilitating symptoms because they aren’t being tested appropriately and are being put on Levothyroxine or Synthroid a synthetic T4 only medication, produced by the big pharmaceutical companies, that needs to convert to T3 but if the thyroid can not convert then the cells do not get the active hormone T3 it needs to feel well and ultimately their doctors continue to raise their thyroid meds and masks their symptoms with antidepressants, anti anxiety, opioids, and blood pressure medications. If it wasn’t for me finding out my thyroid was the main reason for all my symptoms and stopped my synthetic thyroid med so I could start Nature Throid I would be dead. I am off all my fentanyl, antidepressants, anti anxiety, amphetamines, and all other medications that masked my thyroid disease, I am working on my adrenal fatigue. My blood pressure (was taken off one of my blood pressure meds) went down and so did my cholesterol since being on a NDT. It saved my life and there are so many patients that will continue to suffer and live a poor quality of life because they are either unaware, mislead by their doctors, or just too sick and too tired to fight for the proper testing and treatment. We need help! We can’t do this alone. This is going to take a big voice, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Do you know how it feels to be exhausted with a thyroid disorder and feel unwell. Where do you think you would be if you didn’t have T3 hormone? Help us stop the suffering. Please! It needs to start somewhere.
