Expand Highlands County Animal Services and enhance adoption reachout activities

The Issue

Next in line to be euthanized - day to day decision:  Henny, Princess, Cesar, Charlie, Diggs, Chico, Kitty, Emma, Jibson, Jersey, Lola, Cody, Chico, Tucker, Bingo, Layla, Teddy, Jasper, and Arlo.  Highland County Sheriff's Animal Services' facility is woefully too small for the number of dumped/abandoned dogs they have to take in.  They cannot refuse any animal so they euthanize dogs that have been there for an extended time to make room for the new animals.  Yes, it is a 'kill shelter' - and their wonderful volunteers to try to help find homes for them keep a 'Dogs We Lost' page to remember the faces and names of those that were put down.  The local Humane Society tries to help as do many local rescues - but the facilities available are not nearly enough to keep this cycle of sadness from happening.  Expansion of Animal Services has been in the budget many times and has been reallocated each time. In addition, more staff is needed to help network, advertise, set up events and bring attention to these forgotten puppies who by now fault of their own have been discarded.
