Stop targeting girls in High School dress code

The Issue

It’s no secret that high school dress codes are out of date. They unfairly target females, they are inconsistent, and they do not allow for any self individualism.

When it comes to the fingertip rule, we all know that it’s the girls that are being targeted. They are expected to wear shorts that are past their fingertips. This goes for tank tops as well. Very rarely is a boy asked to put his hands down by aside to make sure his shorts are long enough. If a boy wears a “low cut” shirt, no one cares or notices. However, a girl will be called out for it. This is extreme sexualization within the dress code.

The dress codes are always inconsistent. It depends on the teacher or the administrator, and their interpretation of the dress code. Why do they the power to tell you that your shirt is inappropriate? Or that the color of your hair is distracting? When it comes to a dress code, it seems only the adults are the ones “bothered.”

When hair color, earrings, etc are dictated by a dress code, self-expression and individualism are not only discouraged, they are controlled. This affects our self-confidence.

Please sign this petition to show the administrators that we are tired of the unfairness and ridiculous amount of control they have over us. We are already told how and when we can go to the restroom, which classes we have to take, and how many hours we will be in school. We should, in the very least, be able to dress the way we want.

comfort and confidence should be most important!!!!
