We need justice for Jimmy and Hector, two canine officers that were in the care of Officer Nelson Enriquez, who died on May 27, 2015. Jimmy, a seven year old bloodhound, and Hector, a four year old Belgian Malinois, were left locked in crates inside of Officer Enriquez’s K-9 marked vehicle that was parked in the driveway of his home for HOURS. The temperatures here in South Florida that day were well over 80 degrees. With those outside temperatures a vehicle can reach over 120 degrees in less than an hour. Jimmy and Hector were left to suffer for much longer. Officer Enriquez finished his shift early that morning; the bodies of Jimmy and Hector weren’t discovered until almost 7 PM that night. There is no excuse for this. Officer Nelson Enriquez has been on the force for 13 years and has been a K-9 handler for the last 7 years. How could he just forget about his partners? Even if he was exhausted from his shift, how could he leave his fellow officers to die such a pitiful death? As of right now Officer Enriquez is suspended WITH pay! It’s outrageous that this man is basically on a paid vacation after his crime! I feel that Officer Enriquez should be fully investigated. A civilian would be charged with murder if he/she killed a K-9 officer. There should be no special treatment for Officer Nelson Enriquez! This is a tragedy that could have been prevented. Officer Enriquez should not be allowed to work with K-9 officers ever again after this! This man should not ever have an animal in his care in the future and he proved that with his blatant neglect towards his fellow officers.
