HHC frontline staff should receive hazard pay For working with covid 19 pandemic.
The Issue
2020 came in with the biggest fear of all time a pandemic. Healthcare professionals and frontline workers have stepped up and are fighting covid 19. It has proven to be a very scary virus. That we are learning each day how to treat, but are still left with many questions unanswered. As frontline workers :
We need more ppe, currently we can only have one n95 mask and one face shield, that must be used for one week. Gown that are for one use are for for 2-3 patients.
RN are to complete full assessment on patients but also have taken on the role of CNA and housekeeping, and dietary, all to help limit the use of extra ppe being worn by other individuals. So now one nurse does the job of 4.
Exposed to covid in rooms with no negative pressure.
Assignment ratio should 2:1 and 3:1 but is not, required to care over required ratios, increasing safety concerns.
Immunocompromised staff and older staff not able to work with COVID patients, it’s undestood but staff has been limited and thinned out.
Everyday the rules change on what the safety precautions with COVID should be, and several ocasiona have occurred where staff Is exposed.
PTO has been taken away and it’s unknown when we will have it back.
Amongts the anxiety and fear of wether we are bringing this virus home to our loved ones we still rise up and go to work and try to fight this disease, we are compassionate with out patients, we will continue to try to them safe and try to bring them some form of joy in this difficult and lonely time.
In order to do that we need the more equipment, more ppe, and demand hazard pay, we are working under stress, and should have fair pay. Let’s stsnd together!
