End Saskatchewan's Wolf Cull

The Issue

Wolves are again being targeted in a government-issued cull. This time it’s the Saskatchewan Government scapegoating the animals in an ill-informed effort to appease livestock producers.

Herb Cox, Minister of Environment, recently announced an expanded second year of Saskatchewan’s cull, where 200 licenses will be issued to kill up to 400 wolves. This despite residents saying the program “had very little impact” last year.

Wolf culls are widely regarded as an unscientific, unethical, ineffective and unsustainable tactic for dealing with wildlife issues. What makes the killing of wolves even more senseless is that it fails to address the root causes of conflict - habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activity, in this case animal agriculture.

In dealing with conflicts with wildlife, nonlethal options exist and have proven successful for livestock producers. By reducing attractants, utilizing specific calving strategies, guard dogs, alarms, physical barriers (fencing, fladry) and rotating grazing sites, wolf predation can be significantly reduced or altogether eliminated.

It’s time the Ministry of Environment prioritize ethics and sustainability over profit and that they work to protect, instead of destroy, the environment and wildlife. Please join us in the fight to defend wolves by signing and sharing this petition.
