No rezoning. No development of New Markets Heights Battlefield

The Issue

As citizens and residents of Henrico County, we call upon the Henrico County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to reject the application of D.R. Horton, INC. to rezone the 518- acre Camp Hill tract to allow additional residential units (up to 770 from 650) and a lesser standard of construction (i.e., building on slab foundations instead of crawl spaces).

We believe rezoning this tract is not in the best interest of Henrico County for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to:  (i) increasing the density and significantly reducing the quality of the proposed development,  (ii) Introducing more vehicular traffic into the area, ultimately necessitating conversion of our quiet country lanes into traffic-clogged highways,  (iii) encouraging more commercialization of Eastern Henrico County,  (iv) creating risks for damage to the valuable Camp Holly Springs aquifer and, not the least,  (v) placing large-scale residential development onto the historic New Market Heights Battlefield, where 14 U.S. Colored Troops and two of their officers won the Medal of Honor for their bravery and sacrifice on September 29, 1864, during the American Civil War.
