Help us stop the harmful proposal at the Wind Point Lighthouse and Shoop Park

The Issue

Shoop Park is more than just a piece of land in Racine, WI  it's a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for people seeking solace in nature. It is a vital route for migrating birds each spring and fall, drawing visitors who wish to connect with the natural beauty and tranquility only a location like Shoop Park can offer. Not to mention its historical roots, given to the City of Racine in 1917 with the promise that it would remain a public park in perpetuity, accessible to all people every day of the year.

The Johnson-Leipold/Keiser group's current golf course plan threatens to erase this beloved environment. Their proposal includes cutting down all the trees along the shoreline and most of the trees on the east side of Lighthouse Drive and many trees on the west side of Lighthouse Drive.  This would not only devastate local ecology but also rob countless individuals of a cherished place of reflection and interaction with nature.

Furthermore, relocating the parking lot and clubhouse from Shoop Park to Wind Point Lighthouse grounds in a recently established green space will harm the peace and serenity of the Lighthouse area.  Trucking in tons of sand and rock to create a 'dune style course' pays no respect to the area's natural landscape and history.

Shoop Park was meant to be a place for the public to enjoy throughout the year, a pledge made over a century ago that must be honored. Instead of development that jeopardizes these ideals, we must advocate for sustainable practices that respect both the environment and the community's enjoyment.

We urge the local authorities and the Johnson-Leipold/Keiser group to drop their plans. Sustainable practices that takes into account the ecological, historical, and recreational significance of Shoop Park is the way forward.

Please join us in preserving Shoop Park as a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife, a reflection of history, and a community resource. Let's keep it a public park in the true sense, honoring its legacy and our responsibility to future generations. Sign this petition to voice your support and protect this cherished haven for wildlife and humanity alike.

Please sign if you are a current or former resident of either Racine, WI or Wind Point, WI  or if you have ever visited Shoop or Wind Point Lighthouse and would like to protect these special places.  Or, if you just love trees 🌳. Thank you
