Governments: Please Fall Back to Standard Time and Never Change Again

Tell the government to bring back Standard Time this fall and never change it again. The best defence against any pathogens is ample sleep, which many people struggle to attain. Changing time twice a year disrupts sleep, causes stress, particularly to families with school-aged children and teens, and is linked to a significant spike in heart attacks, strokes, and fatal car accidents*.
Daylight Saving Time was first introduced in Germany in 1916 to ramp up war efforts. It is costly to implement every year, but has no conclusive benefits to modern societies. No wonder many countries, including China, Russia, and the EU, have or will scrap it.
While the rest of the world is eliminating DST, some jurisdictions in the United States and Canada have or will adopt year-round DST, which would cause chaos in the winter months when everyone has to get up in the dark to go to school/work, when drivers can't see well.
According to many sleep scientists like Dr Myriam Juda, a researcher at Simon Fraser University's Circadian Rhythms and Sleep Lab, permanent standard time is much more appropriate for our circadian rhymes, and therefore better for our health and wellbeing. With year-round DST, the sun will rise later in the winter, resulting in less exposure to morning sunlight, which humans need to feel wakeful. With reduced exposure to morning sunlight, it's harder to wake up in the morning and more difficult to fall asleep at night.
Sleep is a basic human need, just like eating and drinking, and is fundamental to our overall health and well-being. Sleep deprivation is related to many physical ailments such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, as well as psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. Our societies are currently experiencing an unprecedented sleep epidemic in history. We need more sleep, not less. Changing time to save daylight is a well-intended global experiment that has failed. It is time to put it to bed.
