After countless pleas and testimonies from the students at Spruce Creek High School, we have had enough. There is a serious issue with the administration at Spruce Creek High School, and it needs to be solved. Specifically, the newly hired campus advisor, Sheila Browning. She is better known around campus as “the BBL lady” due to the fact that nobody wants to refer to her by her actual name as a result of her blatant disrespect towards the student body. This blatantly rude and insensitive administrator is known to be inconsiderate and cruel. Her vile actions towards the student body in her short time are not only humiliating and oppressive, but completely illegal. Firstly, she is known to search, or order the search of students for absolutely no reason. In the state of Florida, a certain degree of reasonable suspicion is required to search a student (pursuant to Florida statute 1006.09, subsection 9, which states that searches are only allowed upon reasonable suspicion). She is commonly known to order the search of students for doing nothing but walking to the bathroom, or using the bathroom. She also physically ripped a student (which left a red mark) by the arm from her class for no apparent reason and dragged her to the dean’s office. The final and most appalling grievance only sums up the failure that is the Spruce Creek administration. In blatant disregard for the law and privacy of students, Sheila Browning harasses students for using the bathroom daily. This includes banging on doors, yelling through doors, and ultimately looking under and opening bathroom doors after receiving confirmation that a student is in the bathroom. This is blatant sexual harassment, and a serious invasion of privacy. There are daily reports of this administrator opening the bathroom doors on students using the bathroom. No explanation is required as to why opening the door and watching a student use the bathroom is a grave constitutional violation of our rights as students. The Volusia County school district needs to rectify this issue immediately. This ultimately stems down to a terrible job done by the Spruce Creek administration who have allowed this horrible oppression to continue.
