In June 29, 2020, at a regular Ginowan City Council meeting, a draft of the "Respect for Gender Equality and Diversity Ordinance" (official name: the ordinance to promote a society that respects gender equality and diversity) was "rejected" with 11 people in favor and 12 against.

Council members opposed the ordinance took issue with the inclusion of the word “diversity” and clauses that specifically addressed sexual orientation. In other words, the rejection of this ordinance is a direct rejection of the idea that LGBT individuals and other people who belong to sexual/gender minority groups should be protected from discrimination and guaranteed equality under the law.

The opposed claim that “more discussion” is required – but we believe that it’s unjust that the human rights of minorities are even up for debate in the first place.

Many people in Ginowan are outraged, disappointed, and saddened by the rejection of the proposed ordinance. Yet, this is not just an issue limited to the city of Ginowan in Okinawa. We believe that this has a wider impact, sending the message that LGBT people do not deserve ensure equal treatment in general.

As a result, we seek the resubmission and passing of this ordinance without the deletion of the words “diversity,” “sexual orientation,” or “gender identity, expression”, as has been proposed. By signing our petition, you can help support the progress of LGBT and minority rights in Ginowan and beyond.
