Ahead of the 2025 Federal Election, Are Media’s Cost of Caring campaign, in partnership with Carers Australia and Palliative Care Victoria, calls on politicians to take actionable steps towards guaranteeing superannuation for unpaid primary carers, ensuring financial security for those who give so much.
Australia’s 3 million unpaid carers provide essential care for loved ones, yet they face financial hardship, sacrificing careers, education, and wellbeing. The cost-of-living crisis hits them hardest, with many struggling to afford basic needs. Over a lifetime, unpaid carers lose an average of $392,500 in earnings and $175,000^ in superannuation to age 67 - a devastating gap that must be addressed.
The government has committed to adding super to paid parental leave - now it’s time to do the same for carers. Let’s push for change!
