Breathe For Kaloni!
Kaloni Bolton was a 12 year old little Black girl. Kaloni was a daughter, sister, niece, friend, granddaughter, cousin and so much more; full of life! Kaloni unfortunately fell victim to the injustices, incompetence and racism within the healthcare system.
On January 1st, 2021 Kaloni was taken off life support after losing consciousness while suffering from an asthma attack on December 29th, 2020. This loss of life was directly caused by substandard medical treatment. This was the result of medical racism and negligence.
Kaloni was initially turned away from Renton Landing Clinic- Urgent Care - Valley Medical Center (1205 N 10th St Suite A, Renton, WA 98057) and told to go to Benson Urgent Care (10555 SE Carr Rd, Renton, WA 98055), which was a clinic that the family was told specialized in respiratory care. Upon arriving at Benson Urgent Care, Kaloni was forced to wait for over an hour in her car without having her vitals checked, whilst multiple other people with less severe conditions received treatment before her.
Once Kaloni finally entered the urgent care, she was repeatedly neglected by the staff, not given the standard treatment for asthma attack (nebulization) and given an empty oxygen tank which the staff did not know how to use. This prolonged lack of oxygen caused her to lose consciousness. Medical professionals at Benson Urgent Care then neglected to bring Kaloni to Valley Medical Center ER (400 S 43rd St, Renton, WA 98055) which was only a few minutes away, and instead sent her 40 minutes north to Seattle Children's Hospital (4800 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA) where doctors tried to bring her back to consciousness with no success.
Kaloni’s family had brought her to urgent care clinics in the past for respiratory relief. No child should be dying of asthma in 2021. In an effort to bring about real change within the healthcare system, and ensure no other family has to experience this level of tragedy, the family and community need your support.
We are petitioning for these changes:
UW Medicine / Valley Medical Center
Give Kaloni’s family answers. Accountability now!
City of Renton
Establish “Breathe For Kaloni Day” through official proclamation and allocate funds toward asthma prevention and care for local Black community
Establish “Breathe For Kaloni” law changing the name “Urgent Care“ to “Medical Clinic,” strengthening protocols for patients experiencing respiratory issues and requiring implicit bias training for all healthcare employees
What Kaloni needed was an actual urgent care center with trained professionals who understood the methodology behind effective asthma treatment and how to respond in a crisis situation.
Kaloni's story should make national headlines! Please sign this petition!
