Help us create Aspen’s Law

The Issue

It has been a little over two months since Aspen Runnels was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk located in a school zone at Lakota East Freshman School. Aspen suffered a catastrophic head injury ultimately resulting in him losing his life at 15 years old. When Aspen’s mom finally received word of the charges the driver who hit Aspen would face, it was like a smack in the face. The driver faces a misdemeanor count of vehicular homicide. This is not the first time a student was hit in a crosswalk and the driver walked away with very little penalty for their careless driving. In 2018 a student was hit by a speeding driver on West Chester Rd. while in a crosswalk located in a school zone, that driver was charged with failure to yield at a crosswalk and speeding in a school zone.
We are seeking to change the law for more strict punishments and fines for violating laws in school zones. We are asking that school zone laws be treated the same as laws for construction workers. If a driver is clocked speeding in a school zone their fines should be doubled, if a driver hits a pedestrian in an active school zone their penalty should be an automatic felony.
We will be petitioning the state of Ohio legislators to create Aspen’s Law, but in order for us to properly send the petition we have to have at least 1,000 signatures of Registered Voters in the State of Ohio.
Please help us create change in honor of Aspen.
