The Issue

Our beloved hockey community in Chichester is at a critical juncture. With more than 600 members, ranging from enthusiastic juniors to dedicated lifetime players, our local hockey scene has been a cornerstone of athletic excellence and community spirit for decades. We are passionate about this sport, but more importantly, we are passionate about preserving tradition and fostering new generations of hockey players.

Currently, the three local hockey clubs that have been the heart of hockey in the area are facing the devastating loss of our pitch facilities. This loss not only threatens the future of hockey in Chichester but also goes against the very principles outlined in the Chichester District Council's Local Plan. The plan clearly mandates the prevention of a net loss of playing-pitch provision, with a commitment to replace or expand these facilities through S106/CIL funding mechanisms.

What's more, any replacement must be truly "equivalent" in nature. A 4G football pitch does not serve as a suitable substitute for a hockey-specific Astro pitch. The recent conversion of existing pitches to accommodate football creates a significant policy deficit unless additional hockey capacity is promptly provided.

We therefore urge the Chichester District Council to honor their commitments by supporting the construction of at least two new hockey Astro pitches along with a clubhouse that will provide the necessary facilities to support our thriving hockey community. This will ensure that we have adequate space for training, matches, and community events, further solidifying hockey's proud presence in our beloved town.

Let's make sure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of hockey in Chichester and carry on this cherished tradition. Please join us by signing this petition. Together, we can preserve a sport that is a vital part of our community's fabric.
