The Issue

Chicago is facing an urgent dog overpopulation crisis.  Every year, thousands of dogs in Chicago enter city shelters due to unregulated breeding and neglect.

As a result, our city shelters are overwhelmed and the number of dogs euthanized annually has risen by 34% from 2022 to 2024, at a significant cost to taxpayers.

This crisis demands action now.  Please ask your city council member to support Alderman Timmy Knudsen’s (43rd ward) proposed ordinance to end the dog overpopulation crisis.  Sign the petition today and spread the word to help build support for a common-sense solution to stop animal neglect and euthanasia.  Please call and email your alderman with support for our upcoming ordinance.  Alderman emails are linked below.

Every dog deserves a chance at a life in a safe, loving home.  We’re calling on concerned residents, community groups and pet owners across Chicago to help us address this crisis, save taxpayer dollars and prevent dogs from needlessly dying.

Add your name. Raise your voice.

Take action now to make Chicago a leader in humane pet ownership.

Mission Compassion Paw Inc. (MCP Rescue) is partnering with Alderman Timmy Knudsen in this endeavor.  Please consider donating to Mission Compassion Paw Inc (MCP Rescue) to help further their efforts in providing low cost spay and neuter within Chicago, as well as continuing to rescue the underdogs from Chicago Animal Care and Control.

*Source:  CACC Data Specifics.  34% includes 'Euthanasia by Owner Request' and 'Other Euthanasia', which is primarily due to lack of space and resources at Chicago Animal Care and Control.  For the same period, 'Other Euthanasia' increased 45%.
