Currently in Queensland seatbelts on school buses are NOT a requirement. 

The reason being they are exempt if they fall under the category of route buses - those used on shorter council routes. Additionally, ADR 68 states that if the back seat of a bus is less than one metre high, the bus is exempt from the requirement to install seatbelts. 

In 2024 the Queensland government are using these loop holes to continue to manufacture school buses without seatbelts.

Seatbelts save lives. There is no excuse in 2024 for our children to be travelling each day unrestrained.

In some rural areas for example kids travel hours each day on major highways where the speed limit is 110 km/hr.

All Queensland kids need protecting in the event of a crash and seatbelts have been proven to be the most effective tool at saving lives in vehicles. So why then don’t many buses have them?
