The issue

St Kilda Primary School is a vibrant and inclusive inner city community. It is also one of the largest schools in the area without an indoor recreation space for its 430 students, their families and the broader local community.

As parents, we encourage our children to engage in sporting activities, but not having somewhere accessible and protected from the elements is a significant barrier.

The school currently has nowhere for indoor PE, assemblies, graduations, performances, or extracurricular activities.

The local area lacks indoor spaces for community and cultural activities, particularly when the weather impacts outdoor options.

St Kilda Primary is central to the community, and has been fostering community spirit and togetherness for 150 years. We want to be able to host and drive local community events for local residents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

  • 52% of St Kilda Primary School students and approximately 80% of St Kilda and Balaclava residents live in apartments or townhouses with limited or no recreational space.
  • St Kilda and Balaclava has just 8 public open spaces comprising just 5% of the total land area, compared to the municipal average of 17%, and these are not available in inclement weather.

We are calling for an indoor school community hub: A multi-purpose space we can make available for our unique and diverse local community for sport, leisure and social activities, allowing everyone to benefit physically, socially and mentally, from having access to a local venue.

The Victorian State Government demolished the old St Kilda Primary School indoor hall as part of capital works in 2021, and has not provided any new equivalent facility, nor funding for one. The St Kilda Primary School is lacking critical, basic infrastructure it is entitled to have.

Please sign the petition to tell the Victorian State Government that an indoor school community hub is imperative to provide a complete curriculum to our students, enhancing the educational experience and physical wellbeing of the children, as well as enriching the local community.
