The Issue

Ohio's small counties are renowned for their scenic landscapes, idyllic settings, and close-knit communities. As a lifetime resident, I cherish the natural beauty that surrounds us, a beauty that is now under serious threat. The proposal to build 13 new data centers in our county stands to mar this cherished environment irreversibly, potentially leading to significant environmental damage and undermining the character and tranquillity of our community.

Data centers, while essential to our digital age, consume vast amounts of energy and water; both resources are critical yet finite within our county's ecosystem. Studies indicate that data centers can consume as much power as entire small towns, contributing to excessive heat emissions and impacting climate conditions. Furthermore, they require substantial water usage for cooling processes, which could lead to local water shortages and could negatively affect agriculture, a traditional mainstay of our local economy.

Beyond environmental impact, there's the socio-economic toll. The influx of corporations threatens to shift the core of our community, diverting resources from public infrastructure like schools and roads to support corporate needs. The noise pollution, constant construction, and increased traffic risk disrupting our daily lives, stretching our community services thin and altering our way of life permanently.

We propose a more sustainable path forward. Pike County, Ohio should explore alternative solutions like small-scale tech incubation hubs, which can provide economic growth without adverse environmental consequences. Investing in green technologies and infrastructure can ensure that our community thrives in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.

Join us in protecting the picturesque beauty of Ohio's small counties and preserving our community from becoming a corporate landscape devoid of charm and life. Sign this petition today to urge local government and decision-makers to reconsider or revise this project in favor of more environmentally and socially responsible development plans. The future of Ohio's small counties—and the wellbeing of its residents—depends on it.
