My initial plan was to reach 1000 supporters before contacting parliament, but given the urgency of the situation in Ukraine, I have decided to speed things along by sending an email to parliament with the list of supporters so far. I will send further emails after the petition has gained more supporters as well. The contents of the email are below:

"Good afternoon,

I recently started a petition to gift New Zealand's 30 surplus LAV3 armoured vehicles to the Ukrainian armed forces.

This petition is beginning to gain some momentum. I have attached the list of signatures so far. This is just the list so far, as I expect this list to grow considerably over the coming weeks.

Ukraine is in dire need of military aid to help fight off the Russian invasion. It has repeatedly asked for more military aid, including more armoured vehicles.

New Zealand has 30 surplus LAV3 (NZLAV) armoured vehicles. The NZ defence force has been struggling to find a buyer for these vehicles since 2019 (they have actually been trying to sell a smaller number of 20 since 2011). I think it is unlikely they will get sold at this point.

Instead of having these vehicles sitting in storage doing nothing, New Zealand could gift these vehicles to the Ukrainian armed forces where they could make a real contribution to the battle to liberate Ukraine. I can't think of a better use of these machines.

The UK is to send 120 armoured vehicles to Ukraine. Australia is sending 20 Bushmaster armoured vehicles to Ukraine. The Czech Republic is even sending actual tanks in addition to infantry fighting vehicles. New Zealand can and should step up also in aiding the defence of a fellow democratic country defending itself against an unjustified and illegal invasion.

Please send these armoured vehicles to Ukraine. This could be done in concert with the Australian send of Bushmaster armoured vehicles.

If Australia can do it, we can too.
