In TaiBach Port Talbot there is an area of the river which goes into a culvert and for the last 5 years or so since we have been feeding and watching the ducks. Every year the ducks have ducklings and the fatalities are horrendous due to this system that has been put in place by the council. This system means that once the ducklings enter they cannot get out and they simply perish away in numbers unless we find them soon enough to capture them. This system also prevents fish from coming up and spawning including salmon, sea trout and eels which are a protected species and this system is actually against the law for preventing eels from passing through. Last year over 100 ducklings died because of this and the previous year we had only 3 survivors. For 5 years we have been battling with all authorities and have got no where with them in fact they eventually said it’s an act of god (a man made system an act of god come on wake up). The mother ducks are frantic when this happens and each year we can only do what we can and it’s heartbreaking. All it needs is something inside that enables them to get out if they enter and this wouldn’t even be a costly job.
