Who are Rani and Matra? Rani is an Asian elephant lady in her 50´s. Born in the wild, stolen from her mother and captured in a Croatian circus to perform tricks for her whole life. Now she is being held in a roadside zoo to be ridden by children and adults for their entertainment.
Matra is another Asian elephant lady. She is in her 50's and shares the same fate as Rani. Matra was born in a circus and is one of the few only documented elephants which is born in a circus in Europe that has survived into the adult age. She has been kept in captivity until now and abused for human rides.
Matra‘s and Rani's misery: First time I spotted these elephants during summer 2022 in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. This 'attraction' immediately caught my attention. Not because I wanted to ride an elephant, but because I could feel the suffering and despair of these sentient beings.
The reality of their suffering is bigger than anyone can imagine. The elephants are kept in a small enclosure behind an electric fence with little to no access to species appropriate food, only straw, no instant access to water and no enrichment.
These gentle giants have been constantly frightened with violence which they had to endure since their childhood. Indicative they were exhibiting stereotypical behaviour brought on by the psychological stress of fear and confinement. Swinging their bodies from side to side to express their depression.
Numerous scientific evidence confirms zoo captivity leads these highly intelligent animals to endure mental and physical disintegration, which leads to unpredictable behaviour and premature death. This is a global problem and every abused elephant in captivity in whatever country deserves to be heard.
Our vision for Rani and Matra: With a fellow elephant enthusiasts, I created the campaign with the aim of persuading the roadside zoo to release these elephants and free them to a sanctuary where they will retire and enjoy space and companionship. We are negotiating with the business owners to release the elephants.
We sent a letter to the local authorities in Slovakia, but no change has been enacted to make their miserable life more tolerable. So join us in this petition to help us to campaign to the Slovakian authorities to join a growing consensus across the world that elephants do not belong in roadside zoos.
