Why this petition matters

Started by Simon Goodman

After the success of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this year, I have created this petition to ask the Organising Committee of Victoria 2026 to include Judo as a sport for the upcoming games.

2022 was for judo a great success with almost capacity crowds on each of the days and great support not only for the home nations, but for other nations. Who can forget the bronze medal match where heavyweight judoka Sebastien Perrinne triumphed and Scotland's Sarah Adlington becoming Scotland's first Double Commonwealth Champion in Commonwealth Games history.

In Terms of medals there were 56 medals available and no less than 16 countries won  medals including 10 different countries winning medals on the first day. 36 Nations took part and this shows that judo is not just the big judo countries who get the results.

In terms of mass participation, judo is extremely popular with millions of people around the world from 5 right up to 95 years old (Yes there is at least 1 person over 95 doing judo!). Judo promotes respect and self discipline and is an extremely good life skill to have.

There are many examples of people who have benefitted from judo and have turned their life around because of the sports and this is notably shown in the story of English judoka Ashley McKenzie who despite battling with issue in his youth including ADHD has gone on to appear at 3 Olympic Games and is a double Commonwealth Champion.

I think it would be a shame to see judo excluded and I know that athletes of all countries in the commonwealth would love for the opportunity to compete on the world stage in Victoria.

Please take a few minutes to sign this petition and hopefully we can see judo on the programme in Victoria.
