Native to the Gulf of California, vaquitas are facing extinction due to illegal fishing practices that result in deaths. Imagine a world without the playful and elusive vaquitas gracing our oceans. These beautiful marine mammals are on the brink of disappearing forever. With fewer than 20 vaquitas left in the wild, urgent action is needed to prevent their extinction. Illegal gillnets used for fishing the totoaba fish are the primary threat to vaquitas, as these animals often get entangled and drown as bycatch.
