Help Stop the Slaughter! 2235 Animals Killed in 2025 at Lee County Shelter in Florida!
The Issue
We must demand a stray hold policy of at least 14 days. Currently, dogs are being euthanized as early as day 3. Some pets as early as 1 day. This includes puppies and young healthy dogs. There is no excuse since the shelter is not having capacity issues. This policy does not allow nearly enough time for owners to reclaim lost pets or for these animals to find new homes. A 14-day holding period would enable a much fairer opportunity for families to reunite with their pets and for potential adopters to find a new furry family member.
Dogs at the Lee County Animal Shelter are forced to live in inhumane conditions where they have to eat in the same space they urinate and defecate. This is not only unsanitary but incredibly stressful for the animals. It is essential for the wellbeing of these dogs that they are allowed regular access to the outdoors for bathroom breaks and exercise. These outdoor breaks are not merely a luxury; they are a necessary component of their physical and mental health.
Moreover, when dogs are first brought to the shelter, they are terrified, and rightfully so. Yet, the intake photos that capture them in such a scared and vulnerable state do not present them in their best light. Volunteers, who often have the opportunity to interact with these animals when they are more relaxed, should be allowed to use their own photos for adoption profiles to increase these animals' chances of finding loving homes.
Another critical change needed is to stop unfairly labeling dogs as aggressive when, in reality, they are simply scared. It is well-documented that the stress of a shelter environment can make even the gentlest dog appear aggressive. Treating every frightened bark or growl as genuine aggression is misleading and could lead to undeserved euthanasia of potentially loving pets.
We cannot stand by while the Lee County Animal Shelter continues to operate under these unacceptable conditions. It is imperative that the shelter implements these humane practices to ensure the welfare and survival of these animals. Join me in urging the Lee County officials to take immediate action. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and help create a safe and compassionate environment for the animals at Lee County Animal Shelter.
