Appeal special permit (By-law No. 5635) allowing for the removal of 35 acres of mature forest in Beeton.

The Issue

As residents of Beeton know, if you take a short walk north of town you can find a lovely trail which was once an old railway line and is now a proposed Trans-Canada trail route. This trail leads to unique and stunning mature forests teeming with wildlife, rare endangered Butternut trees and blanketed in trilliums, Ontario's provincial flower, every spring.

Sadly the County has decided to trade in forests, beautiful landscape, fresh air, and its citizen's well being for the economic interests of a small group of individuals. These forests, which are an integral part of Beeton, are now threatened to be removed and converted into farmland. A special permit has been granted to Maria Rizzardo (Tecumseth Estates Inc.) to remove approximately 35 acres of woodlands to expand an existing agricultural area. (Located at 6386 and 6416 9th Line, concession 9 part lots 8, 9 and 10 in New Tecumseth)

As residents of a small town, we have the fortunate ability to enjoy nature in very close proximity, but with this comes the responsibility to protect and preserve this crucial part of our community.

Given that Beeton has far more to lose than it has to gain from this “special permit”, I feel it is necessary to inform our Town Council and the County of Simcoe that their decision on this matter does not reflect the views of its constituents.

By signing this petition, you will not only be protecting an invaluable ecosystem, but exercising your right to have a say in the way our community is developed.
