Help Stop the Build in the Historic District in New Rochelle, NY

The Issue

The proposed development to build a five/six story building at 2 Hamilton Avenue,  and to remove the historic status at 10 Hamilton Avenue, in New Rochelle, NY,  in order to accommodate parking for 100+ cars, will destroy the fabric of our historic district.  The removal of the restrictive covenant on any Rochelle Heights or Rochelle Park property will leave us vulnerable to continued encroachment in our beautiful park-like settings. The approval of the project will set a dangerous precedent for other commercial developments and threaten our status as a recognized historic district.  Any property in New Rochelle with a protective covenant can also become vulnerable once a precedent is set.

The spread of development from the downtown area into our residential areas needs to be checked, and we, the citizens and home owners of New Rochelle need to make our voices heard.  New buildings are encroaching in residential areas causing congestion, and the loss of sunlight.  Take a walk along Hilltop Avenue, where The Illustrator has been built, to see how our neighborhoods, as well as our property values, could be affected.
