Stop Encroachment into Turtle Nesting Area 1000 Steps from Loggerhead Marine Center

Stop Encroachment into Turtle Nesting Area 1000 Steps from Loggerhead Marine Center
The Issue
A developer has decided to try and buy the surf condo in Juno and is proposing building two twelve story buildings.
In doing so they have proposed encroaching over the Coastal Control Line of 1979 this is a required westward setback which is a code to protect our beaches where the turtles go to lay eggs.
Turtles are presently going up into the reeds in front of the Surf property to dig holes and lay their eggs. This is why our beach is labeled "critically endangered" and a designated turtle nesting area.
This is located less than 1000 steps from loggerhead marine center that is .4 miles! We as residents of Juno have a close connection with our turtles. We are steps from loggerhead marine center and for 8 months out of the year we are not allowed to use lights facing the ocean side unless they are red, this is to prevent turtles from being confused where the moon is so they can make it back to the ocean safely. We have all made this adjustment to better our beautiful loggerhead turtle population so We want to protect our turtle habitat on Juno beach for years to come.
A 50 foot encroachment may seem small but this will be a giant project. The developers will have to demolish a pre existing 8 story condo, garage, pool and parking lot. Even if they change the current footprint so it will not intrude into the turtles they will still be affected by construction and the traffic to the local area and beach’s. As stated above the biggest problem for the turtles is light pollution. This will forever change Juno’s coast.
We all understand the struggle of wanting to build more locations for people to live and enjoy the ocean but we also need to consider our fragile ecosystem when doing so. Juno has many condos that have been here since the 70s and rather then tearing them down we think we should preserve and protect Junos amazing history.
**While we welcome everyone to sign this petition it is important to specify if you are in the Juno or Jupiter area for when we bring it forward to Juno’s city council**
