Harp seals, one of the most abundant seal species, are being threatened due to multiple factors that affect their survival. These creatures, native to the cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, face dangers from climate change, commercial hunting, and habitat disruptions, which are all severely impacting their populations.

Climate change is rapidly melting the sea ice, which is critical for harp seal’s reproduction as their young are nursed there. With the sea ice disappearing, harp seals struggle to find suitable birthing locations, which can lead to increased pup mortality rates. the Arctic has warmed significantly in recent decades, resulting in a concerning decline of these essential ice platforms.

Harp seals are not only harmed by climate change, they also face commercial hunting. Harp seals have been hunted for meat, oil and fur, posing a significant threat to them.

Habitat disruptions such as vessel strikes, being caught in fishing gear, and oil spills, can cause injuries or even death to these seals. 

Although their population has been increasing, it does not mean they should be ignored just because they have started to heal. We should strengthen and enforce laws to provide help to harp seals, and work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly to reduce climate change. 

You can help by spreading awareness and urging for international changes to help. As well as fishing properly to not leave any fishing gear in the open which Harp seals, and even many other animals may be stuck in.
