Imagine a German Shepherd dog, like my neighbour's, kept in a small cage in a garden, covered with a blanket for 48 relentless hours between shifts. This poor creature, forced to live amidst its own excrement and urine due to neglect and lack of basic care, barely received enough food to survive. Regardless of the weather, it was forced to travel in a cramped crate in the boot of the car, its existence hidden beneath layers of black refuse sacks to conceal the inhumane conditions from public view. Denied light, air and comfort, the dog endured extreme confinement and fear. Despite owning the dog for 3 whole months, the handler did not even know its gender.

Lacking any understanding of animal care, he thought it was acceptable to keep the dog locked up for up to 24 hours a day because his supervisor told him this was normal practice for security dogs. This callous disregard for the dogs well-being highlights a deeper culture of cruelty, where basic standards of animal welfare were completely ignored.

This heart breaking situation is not isolated. Many professional security dogs are brutalised and subjected to abject cruelty, so unprincipled businesses can profit. They deserve far better treatment than the current, neglectful practices permit. I shudder to think what happens to these dogs when they are no longer able to work.

It is time to take a stand for the rights and welfare of professional security dogs. The industry urgently needs regulation to ensure that these defenceless animals are treated with the respect and compassion they deserve. We will campaign for the implementation of comprehensive licensing and welfare regulations, establishing a mandatory framework governing all individuals and entities engaged in the breeding, training and deployment of security dogs.

• Mandate regular inspections of facilities and living conditions
  Enforce penalties for violations, including fines and revocations of licenses
• Educate handlers on humane training techniques and provide ongoing welfare training
• Create an independent body to oversee compliance and handle complaints
• Ensure that the dogs are sourced from responsible breeders
