Growing up in Iran, the majestic Hyrcanian forests always held a special place in my heart. These ancient forests, stretching across the provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan, are not only home to a rich biodiversity but also vital to the ecological balance of our region. Sadly, these irreplaceable treasures are under grave threat from raging fires, and the efforts to combat these disasters have fallen desperately short.

It is with a heavy heart that I must also acknowledge the role our government plays in this environmental crisis. Unfortunately, the lack of sufficient governmental action, and at times, deliberate decisions, have put these valuable ecosystems at risk. The destruction of our natural heritage for short-term economic gains is a deep wound for many Iranians who cherish their environment.

The Hyrcanian forests, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are renowned for their unique flora and fauna. They house approximately 3,200 plant species, a quarter of which are endemic to the region. These forests are essential not just for Iran's biodiversity but also for combating climate change. They act as carbon sinks and help regulate our climate. Losing them would be catastrophic not only for Iran but also for the global ecological landscape.

The fires, largely human-induced, have been exacerbated by insufficient preventative measures and inadequate firefighting resources. We urgently need to implement stronger fire prevention strategies and enhance the capabilities of local firefighting teams. Supporting community-led initiatives to protect these forests and engaging international environmental conservation groups can help shift the tides against this destruction.

By coming together and raising our voices, we can urge our government to prioritize the protection and restoration of the Hyrcanian forests. It's time to invest in sustainable practices and preserve this natural wonder for future generations.
