The Issue

Help us save our playground!

Garrett Park has long been a cherished space for families in Shawnee, Kansas. The park features two playgrounds: a main playground and a smaller one accessible from the walking trail or 49th and Monticello.

The City of Shawnee plans to renovate Garrett Park starting June 1, 2025. While these renovations include a new playground and other improvements, they also involve replacing the smaller playground with an adult outdoor exercise facility.

While we support initiatives that promote health and fitness for all ages, we are concerned about the loss of the smaller playground, which serves as an essential space for younger children and families in our community.

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the City of Shawnee to:

-Reconsider the removal of the smaller playground in Garrett Park.

-Identify an alternative location within the park for the adult exercise equipment.

-Preserve and invest in spaces dedicated to children’s outdoor play.

Public spaces should cater to the needs of all community members. Removing a playground to install adult fitness equipment may inadvertently prioritize one group’s needs over another’s. Our children deserve dedicated spaces to play, learn, and grow.

Please sign and share this petition to ensure that Garrett Park continues to serve all members of our community.
