Help save lives by enhancing visibility at HWY 65 and CR 9

The Issue

The Isanti County intersection of Highway 65 and County Road 9 (269th Ave NE) has seen countless serious injury accidents and fatalities. Last night (March 5th 2025) another motorist was killed. County Road 9 runs east to west and is a common route for motorists traveling between 35 and 65. As drivers head west on the 12 mile stretch of rural County Road 9, it abruptly stops at one of Minnesota’s most dangerous and highly traveled highways. Aside from a standard stop sign, there are no other warnings as motorists approach.

As a resident of Isanti County, I’m asking MnDOT and Isanti County Highway Department to implement some additional levels of safety to warn motorists of this busy intersection. Starting with an illuminated stop sign and “Stop Ahead” signage with amber flashing lights as vehicles approach 65 from CR 9. Additionally, I’m asking that rumble strips be installed in the west bound lane of CR 9.

There are plans in 2028 to make a “J turn” at this intersection. This is a good step in acknowledging the intersection needs work, but something needs to be done sooner.

I spoke with Isanti County Commissioner Todd Christensen who represents the area of Athens Township where the intersection is located. He has given full support of adding enhanced safety measures to the intersection of HWY 65 and CR 9 (269th Ave NE).

After speaking with MnDOT District 3 Engineer Ken Hanson, he explained that flashing lights are installed and maintained by each county. Please consider reaching out to MnDOT at (651) 296-3000 and Isanti County Highway Department at (763) 689-1870  to let them know something needs to change! Too many people are being injured and killed at this intersection.
