The Issue

District 202 is planning to remove FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) from Indian Trail Middle School next year because of budget cuts. FACS is the class where students learn important life skills like cooking, sewing, laundry, kitchen safety, and teamwork. Other middle schools in the district are still offering FACS, which is why many students and families at Indian Trail feel this is unfair. Students are asking the district to reconsider removing the class and find another solution so Indian Trail students can still have the same opportunities as other schools.

FACS is way more than just cooking and sewing. It teaches really important life skills like laundry, kitchen safety, cooking, sewing, using appliances, and working with other people. Some kids don’t get to learn or practice these things at home, so this class gives everyone the chance to learn them.

I feel like Indian Trail always gets things taken away while other schools still get to keep them. Other middle schools still have FACS, so it doesn’t feel fair or equal that our school is losing it. Indian Trail students deserve the same opportunities as everyone else.

FACS also gives kids a place to belong. Not everyone likes sports or leadership clubs, and some students feel more comfortable in classes like this. It’s a fun class where you can learn real things you’ll actually use in life.

I learned so much from FACS already, like how to cook, sew, separate laundry, and safely use kitchen equipment. It helped me become more independent too.

Classes like Art, STEAM, and FACS are not extras. All are valued and should be safe. They teach important lessons and need to stay are our school.

I know budgets are hard, but maybe the district could share a FACS teacher between schools so Indian Trail students can still have this class.

Please don’t take FACS away from Indian Trail.
