The Issue

In the 1980s after the huge success of the popular soap opera, Dallas which aired on CBS from 1978-1991, ABC wanted to do their own take on a wealthy and dysfunctional family, the Carringtons. The show which was originally entitled, Oil, became Dynasty and aired from 1981-1989. John Forsythe, played the patriarch on the show, Blake Carrington, along with Linda Evans as his second wife and former secretary, Krystle Jennings who became a part of the Carrington family in the pilot.

Joan Collins joined the cast in the second season as Blake's scheming, revenge seeking, and devious ex wife, Alexis Carrington who became a wealthy woman and president of ColbyCo after marrying the Carringtons' enemy, Cecil Colby only moments before his death from a heart attack. The show became a hit after Miss Collins joined the cast and was famous for its over the top glamour as well as the cat fights that took place between Alexis and Krystle.

Now years later CW wants to reboot the popular soap. Only unlike Dallas, which was rebooted in 2012 and lasted three seasons on TNT, CW doesn't want to focus on the young generation of the family and be a continuation. Instead this new Dynasty is be a remake and make Cristal a Hispanic. To fans have watched the original series back in the 1980s, they want the original cast members back.

Please reconsider about making Dynasty a remake and instead make it a continuation of the original. Only please don't make the mistake of taking the show away from its original roots and make up history which Cidre and her writing staff did for TNT's Dallas. Linda Evans, Joan Collins, Emma Samms, Jack Coleman, and the rest of the cast from the original show still look amazing.

Bring them back to reprise their roles and cast young people who are talented and beautiful looking enough to play the next generation. The new Dallas didn't fail because it wasn't a remake. It failed because of writing that didn't stay true to the original show's legacy, history, its characters, concept, and making it vulgar in season 3. Please don't attempt to make Dynasty trashy in an attempt to draw young viewers.

I'm 25 years old and am a huge fan of Dallas. I recently watched all seasons of Dynasty and love it as well. I don't need shows to be racy to be entertained. Good story telling, interesting twists and turns, unexpected cliffhangers, and memorable/exciting characters can be enough to draw in enough viewers of all ages. If you go about remaking Dynasty, it will only be another nail in the coffin in the genre of great soaps.

Sincerely,

Sara Duckworth
