Tomorrow is going to be very odd.
First thing I am heading into London to Camley Street Nature Park to collaborate with ... Sonic the Hedgehog as we try and raise awareness about the threats hedgehogs face with the bonfire season. Yes - they are marketing a game (I did play a sonic game once and after about 20 minutes I was losing the will to live so gave up!) - but they also have a fabulously large reach - to people who might not normally be interested in conserving normal hedgehogs! If you are in the area, come and say hi! I will be helping kids make clay hedgehogs while trying to persuade Ben Fogle that he really wants to promote my books!!
I will also be showing the team from Sega this clip ... I think we could do something quite fun with all the amazing short videos people have been collecting on their trail cameras! Just imagine this hog running up that slope, but 'collecting' gold rings on the way!
When I have finished with Sonic I move on to Lambeth Palace ... yes, that is quite a leap of context! I have been invited by the utterly brilliant Tom Shakespeare to talk at the Eco-Chamber about - well, hedgehogs of course. I know that it is unlikely the Archbishop will be there, but I would love the opportunity to share my experience with his predecessor, Rowan Williams. I had written about him in my first book, A Prickly Affair - because he had chosen the Hedgehog Song, by The Incredible String Band, for one of his Desert Island Discs.
A few years later I met Rowan in Oxford, and gave him a copy of the book - and he told me a story that would have so made the book had I had it in time ... when he had prepared his list of music for his Desert trip one of his press team said it would be useful to have a look, just so they could respond if needed ... and this poor person was sent into deep shock ... Because there is another Hedgehog Song - which existed in the imagination of Terry Pratchett where it was sung by Nanny Ogg when she was VERY drunk. And I am not providing a link (you can look for it yourself!) as it is FILTHY - utterly outrageous! And this was the song that Rowan's colleague thought he was putting out on Radio 4!
I hope that some of you have been able to get out into the woods and look for fungi - I was thrilled to find a patch of Fly Agaric at the weekend - and wish this platform allowed me to drop in more photos!! But here is a link to my instagram page.
And for the picture this update - wonderful to see Britain's Biggest Hedgehog Street with its plaque in place! Congratulations again to Wild Things Keyworth.
Good luck to those of you with pets over the next few weeks. My rescue dog is already suffering so much from the fireworks. I was reminded by this video that it is not just pets that suffer.
As ever, any coins in the hat of this online busker are much appreciated!
