Petition updateHelp save Britain’s hedgehogs with ‘hedgehog highways’!How much should a hedgehog weigh?

Still ticking along - the counter is about to crest 320,000 as I write ... which is bringing me within reach of a THIRD of a MILLION people ... I know that change.org have set the half million up there as the next big step, but this is a little easier to cope with!

So - I am often asked about what to do with hedgehogs seen around in the autumn. We know that they are getting ready for hibernation - but there is a lot of misunderstanding as to what we need to do to help them. I hope that this will clear things up a little.

First, some science. We know that a hedgehog weighing less than 450g will not survive hibernation. But that does NOT mean 450g is the optimum weight.

At what point should we take a hedgehog into care? I am a firm believer in only taking a wild animal into captivity if it is absolutely necessary. There are some who argue that any hedgehog weighing less than 600g should be brought in and fed up. This is troubling as it will result in healthy hedgehogs spending time in what is inevitably a very alien and stressful environment.

Weight should not be the deciding factor in hedgehogs weighing more than 450g. They should also be 'in need' - exhibiting signs of distress, such as being out in the day time. Then, irrespective of weight they should be taken to the nearest carer. For your local contact, get in touch with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society - or call - 01584 890801.
