Friends of Palos Verdes Bowl Seeking Landmark Status

The Issue

Help Save a Fabulous 50s Bowling Alley! Palos Verdes Bowl, a popular community recreation center in Torrance, California, is threatened.  Plans are in the works to demolish the bowling center and replace it with a new retail use.

Opening in 1959, Palos Verdes Bowl was designed in mid-century modern style by the Encino-based architectural firm of Johnson, Engen and D’Agostino. Constructed with exposed industrial I-beams and locally quarried Palos Verdes fieldstone, the bowling center retains a remarkably high degree of architectural integrity and is an excellent candidate for preservation. Palos Verdes Bowl, with its towering, sail-shaped Googie-style sign, has been a beloved South Bay landmark for 60 years.

The good news is that the City of Torrance recently enacted a Historic Preservation Ordinance. But now they need to hear from us about why Palos Verdes Bowl is important. Palos Verdes Bowl has been an integral part of the community for many years, hosting after-school parties, company events, family and league bowling, banquets and birthday parties. Please sign and share your personal memories and let city officials know why you think PV Bowl should be preserved! Share photos on the Friends of Palos Verdes Bowl Facebook page.
