Residents of Last Chance mountain in Santa Cruz County abandoned during CZU fire!!

The Issue

The residents of Last Chance were abandoned in the CZU fire!! Several residents called earlier in the day on Tuesday and spoke to CAL fire and were told not to worry! There was no warning and by the time reverse 911 calls were received, the mountain was already engulfed in flames. It’s a miracle that more human lives were not lost! We grieve the life of our soldier and friend Tad who did lose his life! We grieve the loss of our beloved horse Annie and all the other animals; including many amazing farm dogs! Our people are homeless and destitute. Cal fire and the County of Santa Cruz owe Last Chance transparency. Make no mistake: with proper warning loss of life was preventable!!

To Be Clear: This is not an action against Frontline firefighters. Our community remains in debt to these heroes who continue to fight the front lines! This was about poor management at the top. The fire captain left In charge had no knowledge of the Last Chance community; even though Last Chance has been dialed in to CAL fire for years. Anyone who knows anything about the geography of the area knows that the second that fire jumped into the Waddell, Last Chance should’ve been evacuated. This community deserved a warning and a viable and proper evacuation plan. Had that happened, all people and animals could’ve made it out in time.

Please sign this petition if you are in favor of the officials coming to the table to work toward a settlement. Thank you and bless our town!!
