Hollis street is the main artery for trucking traffic going between ports of the city of Halifax. In the busier months of the year, 200-400 large trucks pass through every 24 hours without restrictions carrying shipping containers or empty flatbeds to be loaded. These trucks are extremely loud and cause vibrations throughout nearby buildings that disturb residents at all hours of the night as they head for the south end container terminal.

HRM's trucking bylaws protect residents from excessive noise during "quiet hours", but contains 24 hour exemptions for industrial trucking routes.

HRM bylaw T400 has scheduled exemptions that restrict heavy trucking traffic to the hours of 7am-9pm. 

Sign this petition to call for Halifax City Council to move the Hollis street exemption from schedule B (24/7 exemption) to schedule A(restricted to 7am-9pm) There have been several new residential developments in this area in the past 5 years- increasing the density along Hollis. A significant portion of this stretch is also zoned as a heritage district with older buildings that are not equipped to dampen the noise. With the increases in the numbers of these trucks over recent years, the level of (industrial 24/7) disturbance has a measurable impact on the health and wellbeing of residents in the area.

This is a clear and easy win for our city council. A chance to balance the rights of residents with commercial interests in the downtown core.
