Help Protect People in the Public Eye - sign for "Liam's Law"
The Issue
We need new laws to protect children and adults in the public eye, especially those in the entertainment industry. The tragic passing of Liam Payne on 16th October 2024 highlights the urgent need for comprehensive safeguarding measures for individuals facing immense pressures in their careers.
As a Community Dentist, I work with children and adults with special needs, so I understand the importance of safeguarding vulnerable people. Many famous individuals deal with constant scrutiny, feelings of isolation, and mental health challenges. It’s essential to advocate for those in the public eye, particularly young entertainers, and ensure they receive the support and protection they deserve.
Liam Payne’s untimely death serves as a reminder of the damaging effects of fame. Mikey Graham from Boyzone said, “Fame can be very damaging, especially in today’s world. Lots of money. Nobody to help. Lots of yes people. Nobody honest.” This shows that the entertainment industry must take responsibility for the well-being of those who are in the spotlight.
To prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of individuals in the public eye, we propose a new law, which, with permission from his loved ones, should be called "Liam's Law." This law would include the following key provisions:
1. Better Safeguarding: Public figures, especially touring musicians and entertainers, should have access to mental health support and safeguarding officers to ensure they receive appropriate care.
2. Regular Medication Checks: There should be regular reviews of prescription medications to prevent over-medication and ensure safe care for those in high-pressure roles.
3. Stronger Legal Punishments: Harsher penalties should be introduced for organisations or individuals that fail to meet their duty of care, especially regarding the mental health of vulnerable public figures.
4. Increased Detection and Prosecution of Online Harassment: There must be more efforts to detect and punish online trolling, threats, and abuse. Social media platforms should help protect vulnerable individuals from harassment.
5. Tougher Penalties for Stalking and Privacy Breaches: Stronger punishments should be established for stalking and for media outlets that breach privacy by obtaining unauthorised photos, videos, or recordings.
6. Support for Touring Challenges: We need to provide support to help manage the unique challenges of touring, such as disrupted sleep patterns, isolation from family, and lack of meaningful rest. This includes allowing regular contact with loved ones and ensuring breaks.
7. Regular Checks for Entertainment Companies: There should be regular audits of entertainment companies to ensure compliance with safeguarding regulations, guaranteeing proper support for individuals in the public eye.
Liam Payne’s death is a call to action. By implementing "Liam's Law," we can help protect public figures from the damaging effects of fame and ensure their well-being.
Please join us in signing this petition and advocating for the necessary changes to safeguard those in the public eye. We have lost too many people already, and it's time to take a stand.
