Pennsylvania may soon join more than two dozen states in requiring both front and rear license plates—and it could be a game-changer for public safety.

Sen. Katie Muth’s proposal would make it easier for police to identify vehicles involved in hit-and-runs, reckless driving, toll evasion, and other serious offenses. It’s already standard in over 30 states.

In Allegheny County alone, there were 10,214 crashes last year—and 73 people lost their lives. In many of those cases, police only had a front-facing camera or witness to rely on. Without a front plate, drivers can disappear before they’re held accountable.

This isn’t about revenue—it’s about safety. And saving lives.
