Help pass New York's Pet Tax Credit Bill (A5340A/S9808A) 🐾
The Issue
Ever since I was a little girl, animals have held a special place in my heart. I have rescued animals from the sides of roads, saved animals facing euthanasia, fostered those in need, and volunteer at PetSmart because I genuinely believe every animal deserves love, compassion, and a chance at life. At home, my cats are not simply pets. They are my family. Over the past few months, I have experienced firsthand just how financially overwhelming caring for the animals we love can become. My cat Finn, a rare Lykoi, has been struggling with ongoing skin conditions requiring veterinary visits, testing, medications, and specialized treatments. My other cat, Taz, is facing something even more frightening: a possible diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or lymphoma, as well as kidney disease and dental issues. She requires specialized food, dental cleanings, ongoing veterinary care, and frequent bloodwork to monitor her condition and keep her health stable. In just three months, I have spent thousands of dollars on veterinary expenses for my animals, and the bills continue to grow. I understand that owning an animal comes with financial responsibility. I have never expected anyone else to take on that responsibility for me. But there is a tremendous difference between everyday pet expenses and suddenly facing thousands of dollars in medical bills because an animal you love becomes seriously ill. As a teacher, I spend my days advocating for my English Language Learners. At home, I advocate just as fiercely for my animals. Finn and Taz cannot speak for themselves, but I can. That is why I am asking New York State lawmakers to support and pass A5340A/S9808A, legislation proposing a tax credit to help qualifying pet owners with certain animal-related expenses. This tax credit will not cover every veterinary bill, but it could provide relief to families struggling with vet costs and potentially prevent beloved animals from being surrendered to shelters because their families can no longer afford their care. This petition is not just about Finn and Taz. It is about every pet owner who has stayed awake worrying about their sick animal, every family facing an unexpected veterinary bill, and every person who believes animals deserve love and proper care. We are asking lawmakers to recognize the financial challenges faced by the people who love and care for animals. Please sign and share this petition to urge New York State lawmakers to move this legislation forward. Our animals cannot write letters, sign petitions, or advocate for themselves. But we can. Together, we can be their voice because our pets are not just animals. They are family and family is worth fighting for. 🐾
