In the early hours of Wednesday morning, our NoToDogMeat team in Hebei, who spend countless hours on investigative missions, heard of a breeder notorious for breeding for medical research loading a truck full of Beagles, including small puppies, to be sold to the dog meat trade. Apparently, he could not get the deal he wanted from the laboratory, and like all suffering animals, they are just commodities for profit. Imagine the life they have had, bred in small cages, fed on rotting food and dirty water, to be then sold on either to be tortured or slaughtered.
We managed to trail the truck till it nearly reached Beijing, when our brave activist Anna and her friends managed to stop the vehicle. The poor pups, all terribly thin with skin and stomach infections, were crying, and a couple had only just given birth.
They are now safely at the veterinary hospital we work with, and we will do all we can to help them.
It was tears of joy but also sadness, knowing the cruelty never ends. We are also extremely anxious about how to pay for their care and the veterinary bills with so many animals in our care.
Fundraising this summer has been extremely slow, and we have barely sold any merchandise, so any donation you can give to our registered charity is deeply appreciated.
It’s not just about Yulin for us (though we plan to return there this fall); it’s about ending the cruel use of dogs and cats for food, fur, and medical experiments.
In other news, we have our annual report to the UN coming up, where we will continue to lobby for animal welfare laws and will take to the streets again as South Korea celebrates its so-called final year of publicly eating dog meat. The government is literally going to pay them to change professions. Let’s see how that pans out.
