We started our petition because we refuse to stand by and do nothing. At NoToDogMeat, we don’t just collect signatures—we deliver them, face to face, to those in power. With the Yulin dog meat festival approaching, our small team went to Guangxi province, the home of in, close to Vietnam. It’s a place where rules are strict, and secrecy is everywhere. When you land, the plane windows are shut, and you sit in darkness for half an hour as you arrive. No photos allowed. But we went anyway, determined to speak out. Nanning, the capital, is busy and full of government offices. We brought our letter and every signature with us, demanding an end to the cruelty in Yulin.
The night before we handed everything in, we walked around downtown. We found nine dog meat restaurants, and one even offered takeaway and delivery. It was shocking and completely unacceptable. People can’t tell us Yulin is just a one-off. Dog meat restaurants are common here, but seeing so many out in the open in their flagship city Nanning was still a shock for us.
There are many ways you can raise your voice. If you follow us on X, you will see we have been tweeting to all the Guangxi promotional sites. We have to get these restaurants in Nanning closed. Action in the big city will ripple to the smaller areas. We have also been to dog breeding farms, and tonight we stumbled across one of the many “mom and pop” slaughterhouses in the small townships around Yulin. All terrifying places.
We have to stress again that we are only a handful of people. It’s always the same: small teams and local NGOs working on the ground to make a difference, while the big organizations stay in their offices and focus on marketing. We hold space for victims, and rescue as we can.
